Rejecting maps

I noticed that a lot of maps are getting rejected lately, what do you think about this? Do you prefer fewer maps like it is now, or like it was in the past when there was more map releases?

Less map rejects = more bad maps = no good

Do you mean that bad maps should get released to have a certain amount of map releases? Where does this come from? If you look at the planned releases, you'll see that we won't run out of maps anytime soon. There are reasons why maps get declined.

Many maps that are getting rejected aren't bad.

I think fikmesan isnt clear about the point.
the problem is that maps which would have been released a year ago are mor elikely to get rejected by now. i have said it 10 times already and i will say it again: some testers shoul rethink their way of testing, you ask WHY a map should be released and not WHY NOT. as far as i know we neither have limited dataspace for maps on the server nor do we force anyone to play these maps. with the new automatic release thingy (if it would work hehe^^) we also dont need a person to release it by hand thus allows to have maybe multiple releases a day. especially fikmesan who maps lots of novices should be handeled less critical.
first there are complains about too few novices, then you reject them.

That's the right question, imo. A new map should add something to DDNet, or else it doesn't really make sense to release it.

Well...if I want to play a good map and have to klick the "vote random"-button like 5 times until a nice one is chosen, I'll probably leave aready after 2-3 trys. There are tons of maps, how should I know which maps do fit my interests? Also before playing them you can't know if they are good or not, so you are forced to play these maps.

If there are multiple releases a day, the single map won't be appreciated anymore. That's a general problem we actually have that good work will be barely recognized, thus mappers get demotivated to invest their time. Didn't you ever wonder why so many great mappers stopped mapping? When I talk to them I often here statements, such as "it's not worth the effort". (This is also related to the massive player drop in summer 2015, tho.)

2 years ago we tried to promote good maps with a section in the votes called "Selected Maps". It still exist on Novice, but it heavily relies on active people, thus it doesn't work.

A further point is that more releases imply more work for testers, since even if a map isn't good it still should be mostly bugfree and playable. Imo it is way better to focus the tester's work on good maps.

These people who ask for more Novices won't be happy if you just spam them with crap maps. They want nice maps. Also it would be really weird to explain mappers that other maps get released, even though they are worse...just because they are made for another difficulty... That's exactly the situation then where mappers of harder maps either quit mapping or just spam bad Novice maps, too.

good point. i have thought about it too. thats where we are back at the niche maps again. off courxe if any map is getting a broadcast on every server and the map is not for everybody then it will get some hate at the first day. there are 2 different player-minds (or so) the speeder and the (bigteam) finsher. why do you think there are so many shortrun maps? they are all basicly the same thats right. no parts no whatever. maybe after the map has became ready for release decide whether its a map for the masses (bigteam) finishers or the speeders, those who play a map more often. the niche map then gets kind of a "silent release" ... and thats whre i am, i have no clue how a silent release could look like. no broadcast would be shitty too.

by the way i think its sad so few people speedrun anymore :(

That's not rly compareable sincs back then we had more maps in the testing section and actually more releasable maps. Now we have one small page with a few releasable maps. We can't just lower the strings to crap ddnet with unenjoyable low quality maps. We already release decent maps which are for a few guys questionable but we definetly couldn't go on step further and release maps just to have more "playable" stuff.

So Ravie is basically right.
