I have 150US$ credit for AWS

Post by Pathos »

I know that from talking with def- before, there is a strong preference for full control. I think that'll be possible for SSH, but not the Amazon account because it's a student account with credit, therefore Amazon account control cannot be controlled. On top of that, there is a lot of personal info that is locked and cannot be edited/deleted/hidden.

With the latest DDOS, I feel that we can put the AWS to a test at least. What do you think?

We have tried AWS before in Ireland, thanks to eeeee I believe, and they didn't deal well with our kinds of UDP attacks.

Thanks for the offer anyway!

I see. I'm sorry to bother you about this and it's good to hear that you tried, but I'm curious on the details because I have difficulty in believing that the no.1 player in the industry (though pricey) didn't deal with it very well. Is there a transparency report on what you tried? I think the community would appreciate if you communicated what was tried and what went wrong. There could be someone in the community with a solution that might not have been considered.

Solution that has probably not been considered :
Report to police.

Apparently the guy dosing is french so it is a crime punishable by 5 years of prison. Should be quite efficient no?

I don't have a "transparency report". Since when is Amazon a major player in providing game-specific udp based DoS protection? Generally this requires solutions where the protocol of the game is known and the firewall specified for that case. Most hosters offer good DoS protection for HTTP(s), but it is not applicable to UDP games.

Why do you think I haven't considered this? I have spent quite some time explaining the nature of DDNet and the attacks against us to both the police and the public prosecution. Long enough that the police officer responsible for my case has already retired.

Good timing actually, just today I received a letter by a German public prosecutor that they will not pursue my report of DoS attacks even though I had verified the full name of the attacker and a statement by him indicating that he was indeed responsible for the attacks. To quote: "there is only a small fault or no public interest in a criminal prosecution". So since DDNet is neither important enough nor the damages we receive are of any monetary value, we are now in some way ceritifed fair game for DoS attacks.

I'm sorry for the players, but I'm a bit tired of interacting with the police about these issues, especially when I know that no action will be taken. If it is already that hard to get punishment for German attackers against German servers owned by another German, then I don't even want to imagine what it's like in international cases.

What about the hoster? He has to deal with it as well and may have more chance?
