SA servers: New host is not too great!

Post by garry »

Hi all,

Would just like to point it out, our beloved SA servers have now changed to a new host. It was before hosted in Cape Town , now in Johannesburg. Many SA players including myself are complaining about the ping on these new servers. It is terrible, spikes and so much delay. Our connection to these servers are very unstable, no idea why(it is not just me, most players are complaining that it is unstable) Anything we can do about this??

Regards

Hi hi

Yeah na yeah, ping is super unstable on SA servers now. Wouldn't mind if we could tackle the problem as gents and talk about a viable solution.

Hello,

I would to like counter what Garry said. I am not having any issues. Instead, my ping has lowered from 60's to early 20's since i live in Johannesburg and the servers are closer. I would like to say that sometimes people have to change hosting providers and the new environment may change and may not be like the previous environments. It is something that people have to accept and move on. Furthermore, internet in South Africa is not the best and ping spikes and possible packet loss may be experienced. Hosting costs are not like Europe and America where you pay $5 and get a nice and reasonable package. Here you get ripped off with hosting costs unless you use Host1Plus. In summary, we should not change and i am happy with current new conditions.

*edit*
Changing a host for 30 players is not worth it

I would like to add that our majority of players are from Cape Town and close surrounding areas. We do not have many at all near Johannesburg really. Therefor SPYRES to disagree with you, we may have 30 players on our servers in the last four weeks however I am afraid to say that 30 may fall to a flat 10 or 5 due to this host change. There I was just in game with you got 15 minuted into that map and the server spikes us all and I failed. It is not enjoyable, there myself and Irishidiot said we are not going to play teeworlds anymore as its not fun to play and just spike and have delay at random points. There we were on ts with Cookie,Zen,Irishidiot they all dont like the new servers. Cryptic joined the game, he does not like it either. Like I said majority would prefer the servers to go back to Cape Town.

@garry, instead of complaining, you could also sponsor a server in "Cape Town". :P

Hi Everyone,

I have noticed some odd spikes on the servers myself and have already gotten in contact with my provider to sort out the problem as soon as we can. I ask that you please be patient in the mean time.

As for some pings being higher and others lower, that is to be expected as the servers are now hosted in JHB. You should notice a 20ms difference.

Update: The server has been moved to a more powerful node, please let me know if you experience anymore spikes.

Another point that has just come to my attention is that the Namibian players now have 200+ ping due to the move (no longer fibre connected directly to CT). I realise ther're a small percentage of the player base but it's something to add to the discussion.

I can add that when the servers were in CPT, we all had an equal ping because 90 % of SA's ISP's connected directly to cape town. It was all with 40 - 50 ping :) (which is a ping you want to have probably) . Now JHB servers give some 20 - 30 but most 60 - 80 as we dont have direct connections to Johannesburg. 40 ping for all was great, to get this back I am more than happy to sponsor a paid VPS to DDnet South Africa if DDNet is interested in rectifying this.
