Connection client-server can't be established via unsecured WiFi over FritzWLAN stick

Post by kettu »

I'm temporarily using an old FritzWLAN stick to connect to the internet. Launching the DDNet client, the server list doesn't load and I presume a connection can't be established from client to server for some reason. The WiFi connection is unsecured and I'm not using a VPN.

When I use a VPN, the server list loads and it's possible to play on some servers but of course on most servers, I get banned because the domain is on the DNSBL.

Hence I'd like to ask if there's some client side setting that allows for the connection to be established without the need for a VPN?

I'd like to tunnel through my FritzBox at home (because not blacklisted) but that'd require user confirmation with the landline phone and I'm not at home :?

That sounds very weird. Do other online games work? Have you tried disabling any software firewall?

I tried installing Counter Strike again (through VPN) without success so far. After some time, the bandwidth drops drastically. I don't know why but to me it seems like the connection to the VPN is overburdening the WLAN stick.

I don't have any issues with browsing the web though.

I don't have a firewall and I'm using the same computer/software I've been using at home where I was able to connect to DDNet servers without issues.

Could the connection problems be related to this?:

Oh well, I'll do a clean install of Ubuntu 20.04 next week and find out if that fixes anything. I've upgraded the current OS several times and messed with ifconfig and other things, so a clean install may fix things. Booting the computer takes five minutes and it has an m.2 drive ;)

Browsing the web uses TCP which is more reliable when you have packet loss. I guess something in your wifi hardware is faulty and dropping packets all the time. Tunnelling through a VPN might use TCP (probably not) or make the packets look different and maybe the fault only happens for specific packets. I don't think we can do much about this.
