Improved prediction/antiping by trml

Post by deen » Fri Apr 12, 2019 8:35 am

We currently have a change by trml promising many improvements to DDNet client's prediction and antiping: https://github.com/ddnet/ddnet/pull/1620
There is also prediction for some new things, and some other changes:
  • prediction of laser, shotgun, ninja, fng hammer, pickups and ddrace tiles (freeze/unfreeze tiles with cl_predict_freeze)
  • laser and bullets are rendered when you fire them and bullets don't go through walls (when both cl_antiping_grenade and cl_antiping_weapons are enabled)
  • antiping for flags
  • prediction of dummy input
  • an additional smoothing option that attempts to make antiping less jumpy (cl_antiping_smooth)
Please try it out by using the Nightly build and report your experience: https://ddnet.tw/news/nightly-builds/

Wow guys this is really something special you have done here.

I tried testing all the usual things on local SA servers. Everything felt extremely smooth and clean. I noticed just general cleanliness to the client now.

But i think you guys did something even more amazing. I can fly with my dummy NO problem on ger server. That weird ugly pulling delay is gone now for me. you can see the lag but it adjusts so well on client side. Truly good job. im gonna go try and see how just deep fly is on Ger server. I can assume its good. But i can say that no one is online using the net at this current time. Regardless.. I CAN FLY ON GERMAN SERVERS WHAT IS THIS.

GOOOOOD JOB!!!!!!!

*Edit. Deep fly works just as well as hammer fly. You just have to get used to the delay and its really easy. You guys have honestly changed the game for the best.

Ha deen,

I didn't test anything yet but this sounds like a great improvement. I will try it out and send you some feedback as soon as i have time.

I also got some feedback.(that is why i am writing this message) i know qshar wants hook prediction for his moving tiles and i don't see that in change list. Wouldn't that also be a good idea?

What i noticed is that the movement of the mouse feels slightly different. Heavily noticed when i was trying to do Rocket fly on local server.

Weapons all feel good with 200+ ping. Flying and and dummy fly is good. (Obviously just copy fly is broken but its severely broken now.)

The only bad part i noticed was that when i play on servers where i have to fly a person with good ping, its seriously jumpy and jittery. I think more so than before. And my ping is stable as can be right now. Not sure if this will hurt people like MilTee. Also on the kog server it seemed a bit hard to watch other players compared to old anti ping.

So yeah still needs more extensive testing and thoughts from players who relied heavily on antiping previously.

Dummy works almost perfectly with high latency and most weapons for solo.

I will test it after I woke up. From what I can see right now I wouldnt merge it without some more testing and maybe improvements.

omfgg,this client is awesome
fly is good,no more going to far from where u are when u are freezed, and also for some reason i have better control with it(probably because everything so smooth)
but this anti ping feature should be included in next version,it makes any hard maps which i couldnt much much easier, like i can fly now with better control
i only dreamed of this feature and this trml guy made it true, really awesome job man, playing with 140 ping is far easier now, thank you again man

Jimmy Jazz The 1st: Can you check how the jumpiness is with cl_antiping_smooth 1 (in f1)?

This setting is meant to be a new option for reducing visual jitter (more than before), but maybe the old behavior should still be in place when the setting is disabled. Also, what is your fps, and it is the same as with normal (latest) ddnet client?

okay. with dummy it all works perfectly, but with another player (in my case jimmy jazz, ping: 9 (my ping: 226)) its horrible if he drags me or we do hammerfly.

and i dont really like this "smooth" feature. what is it for? whats the benefit of it? it doesnt really "work" for me, it seems to be even more unsmooth.
