The DDNet Race Server
A long time passed and nothing happened on the race servers..
I'm fully aware of that and I'm sorry. It may sound simple but I just didn't found the motivation to do anything, I did other things, forgot time and then I had to work again. Anyways, many changes going on right now (new admins, steam, forum re-structure etc). It all seems to be in a revulsion and maybe it was even good to pause the whole race server project for a while :o


This is the main thread of the official ddnet race servers. You can post all server related comments/questions here.
I'll start with covering some of the main issues right now.

About old-race maps, already released somewhere in past
It was a long way, but we came to a final solution. There will be more racemaps, probably around 80 at all.
I'm not sure whether all selected maps are worth realising, so I would like to hear some opinions and maybe delete the worst maps from the huge selection. As I heard, aaa already did a selection. If that's true, I would love to hear it <3
We don't want to end up with another 100+ maps server imo.

Furthermore we have to decide whether we want to release gores maps or not.
I added a few popular maps from older race servers (eg run_green_darkness) to the list and to be honest I would love to see them on the servers. Maybe we could even move the current gores/fly maps (FlippLipp 10, 2+2=green) to the race servers :o

And finally, short runs. I selected a few very popular ones and imo we should definitely release at least a few of them (run_ankii, g6). With the possibility to give zero stars, it should be no problem at all. Many players requested those maps.

About fixing older maps; I think we don't need to change that much. Just check if all layers are displayed properly (no empty bg, hd-only etc), remove unused tilesets and add stoppers if they are necessary (to prevent stupid fails). That's all.
However, this is still a lot of work with the great amount of maps. So, any help is appreciated.

If you want to help with something or if you already tested an existing race map. Feel free to send me a pm.
I'll also create a thread in the internal forum (for all staff members) with further instructions.

Quick note: I'm aware that there were (minor) gameplay changes on some of the released maps. I just wanted to increase the play-ability with balancing the maps (run_pokemon) or fix the obvious graphic bugs (run_forrest). In the moment of changing this, I didn't thought about the hige impact at all..
It was not my attention to completey change the player experience or to upset old racers. Furthermore I didn't want to igonre people who helped me by just changing their already fixed maps and make them worse. I'm utterly sorry for all of that and it will not happen again. I guess you learn from mistakes.

About new race-maps, not already released on older server
There are also quite a few new race maps, especially created for the ddnet community. I think it would be a complete mistake to decline them. Maybe in the near future we will have some active mappers for race maps again, like a few years ago.
So, I am for releasing new maps together with old ones. It's always good to motivate people to create new maps.

About the point system
Initally, the best solution was to completely remove the point system for the remaining maps. But then we would have some maps with points and the rest without. Furthermore I agreed with deen that no points might be not the best solution.
However, the amount of points you get for playing on the race servers should be very low and not really noticeable. So, ddrace-only players are still able to lead the ranking table without focusing on another modification.

The first suggestion would be to give 1 fixed point per map. That means, offset=0 and bonus=1 (stars*offset+bonus= points)
There is one big downside though, the rating of a map is totally useless. You'll get one point for a really easy map as well as a super-hard one.
The ranking for the race server would be destroyed as well, cause the points would only show how many maps you finished..
For that, this method is garbage.

The second suggestion would be to give the amount of stars as points, just like the current novice server. That means, offset=1 and bonus=0 (stars*offset+bonus= points)
The impact on the current leading board would be minor, even if there would be like 90+ maps. You can simply collect the same amount of points with finishing only a few brutal and modearte ddrace-maps.
So, maybe this would be the best solution as it keeps the point system alive but doesnt force anyone to play race just for points.

But maybe you have a better suggesstion, we would love to hear.
It's all still a subject to discuss.

A few things happened here:

We love you Saavik :*
She fixed all race maps, so there will be new maps on the race server in the next few days :D
Furthermore we decided to probably not release the gores maps, just longruns and some shortraces.

We still have to decide about the point system and new-created maps (like run_aim).

Fixes very low quality, almost even released race map have a stupid tele bug or collision misstake..

Try to check 100+ maps without any mistakes.

OF. Those maps were played on other servers, so we don't need to change everything in my opinion.

i mean you start fix after release, dat does delete ranks etc.

I only delete too much tele for entities players for example
it doesn't affect gameplay at all so what's the problem

Sure everyone can make misstakes but its annoying 2download 1 map more than 1 time
