How about the client only loads the skins needed? I mean when I just start the client, only my and my dummy's skin are loaded. When I enter a map the other clients tell me which skins are used and only those are loaded then. This way I could have 5000 skins in the directory, but would effectively u...

My solution would be to turn of all custimzed skins by standard, so they dont need to be loaded in memory and an option to turn these skins on again.

I think thats a good suggestion
